We, the undersigned will no longer accept the current state of discrimination in the provision of healthcare for Canadians with autism. Everyday we delay is a day lost for these most vulnerable Canadians and their families. Across North America, autism is being diagnosed at an alarming and increasing rate. Today, 1 in every 110 or almost 1% of children are being diagnosed with this neurological disorder.
To end this discrimination and its harmful consequences, we demand that Parliament:
1. Amend the Canada Health Act and its regulations to include science-based autism treatment (ABA applied behaviour analysis, IBI intensive behavioural intervention) as a medically necessary treatment for those Canadians with autism; and
2. Require that all provinces through their Medical Services Plans provide this essential treatment for autism, with funding to be provided as necessary from the federal government.
